Most people don’t spend much time thinking about moisture management inside their footwear.
I do. Mostly because my feet have spent the last 32 years attempting to recreate freshwater ecosystems.
To give you an idea of the situation, if I wear sandals long enough, small lakes form. If I walk barefoot on the wrong surface, I occasionally leave visible footprints behind. My father has a strict rule that I must wear sandals on his black marble floor because experience has taught him that I am essentially a walking humidity source.
In medical terms, it’s called hyperhidrosis.
In practical terms, it means my feet sweat like they’re training for an endurance event that nobody else was invited to.
Hyperhidrosis Is A Condition
Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating. In my case, it’s severe.
We’re not talking about slightly damp socks. We’re talking about visible moisture inside footwear within minutes. We’re talking about leaving evidence.

Also known as VBLs.
If you’ve never heard of them, the concept sounds completely backwards.
The basic idea is simple:
Instead of trying to keep moisture away from your feet, you intentionally trap it. At first glance, this sounds like something invented by a committee dedicated to bad ideas. In reality, it solves a specific problem.
Which is mildly annoying because bread bags inside expensive mountain boots sounds like the setup for a joke, not a legitimate moisture-management strategy.
The Moisture Problem
In cold environments, sweat naturally moves outward through your sock system and eventually reaches your insulation. Over time, that moisture accumulates. Socks become damp. Boot insulation becomes damp. Warmth decreases. Comfort decreases. Your chances of having a good time decrease.
VBLs interrupt that process. Your feet still sweat. The insulation stays dry.
Physics remains undefeated.
Why This Matters
Most people think VBLs are about comfort.
They’re not.
They’re about insulation management.
Dry insulation performs better. Dry insulation stays warmer. Dry insulation weighs less. Most importantly, dry insulation remains dry over multiple consecutive days.
That’s where VBLs become interesting.
The longer the trip, the colder the conditions, and the more difficult it becomes to dry gear, the more valuable they become.
Fancy VBLs
There are purpose-built options.
I personally use the Point6 Cold Weather Vapor Barrier Liner Sock. They’re durable, comfortable, and specifically designed for this purpose. If you’re spending significant time in cold environments, they’re worth considering.
They also look considerably more respectable than the alternative.
The Other Option
Bread bags.
Yes.
Actual bread bags.
If someone had told eighteen-year-old me that one day I would voluntarily put bread bags inside expensive mountain boots and publicly recommend the practice, I would have had questions.
Yet here we are.
A simple plastic bread bag between a liner sock and an insulating sock works surprisingly well. It looks ridiculous. It feels slightly ridiculous.
It works.
The mountains do not care whether your moisture management strategy is fashionable.
Why Normal Humans Might Hate This
An important disclaimer:
My feet have been bathing in their own juice for over three decades. They’re acclimatized. Stockholm syndrome may also be involved.
If you don’t have hyperhidrosis, your first VBL experience may feel strange. Very strange. Some people adapt quickly. Others immediately begin questioning their life choices.
Both reactions are normal.
This Is Really A Systems Article
Like most things in backpacking, VBLs are not actually about gear.
They’re about systems.
You can spend hundreds of dollars trying to improve your insulation. Or you can stop soaking it from the inside.
One solution is considerably less expensive.
The lesson isn’t “everyone should use VBLs.” The lesson is that moisture moves whether you think about it or not. You can either manage it intentionally or let physics manage it for you.
Physics is not particularly interested in your comfort.

Final Thoughts
Most people hear “plastic bags inside boots” and assume you’re about to explain a terrible idea.
Sometimes they’re right.
This is one of the exceptions.
Whether you use dedicated Point6 VBL socks or a repurposed bread bag, the principle remains the same: keep the moisture where it starts and keep the insulation dry.
